BEARCATS BAJA
PURPOSE
Baja SAE is a collegiate motorsports design series organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International), with a history spanning five decades. The competition challenges students to apply classroom knowledge and industry experience to real-world engineering problems by designing, building, and testing an off-road vehicle. Beyond technical development, Baja SAE provides valuable opportunities to connect with industry professionals through corporate sponsors, technical mentors, and competition networking, helping students build relationships and pursue future careers in engineering and motorsports.

WHY BAJA
What makes Baja SAE unique is that it is entirely student-led, with team members taking ownership of nearly every aspect of the project. From vehicle design, fabrication, and testing to budgeting, fundraising, project management, and competition travel, students are responsible for turning an engineering concept into a fully functional vehicle. More than just an engineering competition, Baja SAE challenges students to develop the technical expertise, leadership, teamwork, and real-world problem-solving skills needed to succeed as well-rounded engineers and professionals.
THE RESULT
These goals are achieved through an international competition featuring both static and dynamic events. Static events evaluate the vehicle’s engineering design and business case, requiring teams to justify their technical decisions, demonstrate sound engineering principles, and defend their financial planning before panels of industry professionals. Dynamic events put the vehicle’s performance and driver skill to the test through a series of timed challenges, culminating in a grueling four-hour, wheel-to-wheel endurance race on the final day. Together, these events challenge students to develop a vehicle that balances performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost.
